En Route: Aspen, CO to Wichita, KS

While this may not seem like the most interesting post of all time, let me correct you; not only does this give you the opportunity to get a sense of a long day of driving with us, but ALSO we get to tell you a very important story.

LAURA TRIES SONIC FOR THE FIRST TIME.
(clearly she loved it, as evidenced by the ranch dressing dancing all around her mouth)

Kansas: even more boring than we thought.

OK. So this is where it gets interesting. AFTER we crossed Vail Pass (around 12,000 ft), we got to the Loveland Ski area, and an amazing thing happened. Going an astonishing 5 mph on some icy roads, I lost control of my Corolla and it very slowly slid from the left lane, into the right lane, was struck (bumped) by a van near the rear doors, which flung (guided) my car into a spin, and was eventually stopped on the side of the road, T-Boned by the van. There is a very small dent on my car, which we will show you tomorrow.

BABY'S FIRST ACCIDENT.

icy conditions

helicopter.

More helicopter shots.

FABULOUS! I saw like 15 accidents just like that on the GIANT HILL leading up to the old hospital I used to work at. At one point a car had crashed into a parked car... and had another car hit it from behind... and another car hit that one from behind... and another car hit that one from behind. EPIC. All at 5mph of course.

did you damage the van??!!

Laura and Ben,
Looks like you guys got out of San Diego in the nick of time. Say, did you remember to stomp out that campfire?

I'm glad your accident was a gentle one. Cars act skittish on snowy roads. Keep your eyes on the road and not on the mountains with lakes right next to them.

If you like scenery, rural Ohio looks pretty good right now. The trip to Malabar Farms was filled with fall color, pumpkins, hot cider and fresh donuts at the little farm stands. I brought back a jar of home made applebutter for you as a present.

It looks like you should be back by the end of the week. Let me know.

Love,
Dad

But didn't you go to Denver? I want to hear more about Santa Fe from Laura because Ben seems bored by everything. Erica

This is a great way to avoid the inevitable awkward situation of coming back from a road trip and wanting people to sit down and look at your pictures. It was even worse in the days when people turned off the lights and made you sit thru hundreds of slides of some trip. We can explore as we want. I got caught in the helicopter shots that were with your accident description thinking-"Is that his corolla? Did they need airlifting out of the ditch? I figured not, but that shows what juxtaposition can do.
