Wilderness!

Hey guys,

This will be our last post for a little while because from the Detroit to Vancouver, we will probably not have an opportunity to stop and catch wireless to blog our hearts out. So you'll have to stave off your addiction for a couple days, and just follow along in your heads as to where we are. We'll travel first to the Badlands in South Dakota, then to Yellow Stone in Wyoming, and on to Glacier in Montana before we hit the west coast. You can look forward to a lot of camping pictures, some sweaty hiking pictures, and, if you're (we're) lucky, maybe some nice snowy landscapes from high in the mountains!

Take care,
See you soon,
Ben and Laura

Detroit, MI

Addendum to the Ottawa trip:

Patrick: this shop is located in the vicinity of your school. We drove past it when we got lost on our way to the highway. Enjoy it.

The drive to Detroit was scenic and Canadian. We drove through Ontario, complete with its grasslands, aggressive drivers, and pump-first pay-later gas stations. It was an altogether uneventful drive, and when we arrived at our friend Tracy's school, we were relieved to be at our next destination.

Tracy with a "Mint Sensation" cupcake from this little shop called, "Cupcake Station." We stopped in late this evening to procure some discounted confections. They may have been stiff, but they were nevertheless tasty.

(I don't know why this is underlined, I can't figure out how to correct this...so it will stay)

For dinner, we ate at this restaurant in Detroit called "Union Street."
I had a pistacho-crusted salmon (subtle and flavory), while both Tracy and Laura chose the "Dragon Balls," which consisted of gorgonzola cheese wrapped in a thin cutlet of chicken, deep fried and tossed in a spicy chili sauce. They were enjoyed by all involved. Check it out if you're in the area!

Down the street from Union Street, we tried parking on the street, but noticed that a car had had its window broken out, so we decided to park the next street up. Detroit has a reputation for a reason!

As former (and current) art students, we love some thrift store action, but sometimes you'll come away with a little extra. Here, Tracy gets a door prize after trying on some purple shoes.

Tracy looks classy all the time.

Back view.

Tracy found a pink, sparkly outfit made of Hammer Pants and poofy shirt. She looked like an old woman/genie.

All I need is some thick gold chains and I'm Spinderella.

Tracy's studio!

It's very nice. We're jealous.

At Tracy's school, Cranbrook Academy, the different departments compete in an annual "Raft Regatta," where each department builds its own raft and races it around a tiny island in this lake. The Painting department came in second place, I think. Good job, duders.

During the Regatta, Tracy, Laura and I, along with two of Tracy's school friends, swiped two metal canoes from the boatyard and used our hands to paddle over to the competition and sabotage the other teams (which was not stipulated as against the rules). Eggs were involved and so was some strategic ramming, but in the end we ended up with an excellent vantage point for the event and good memories.

Tracy in her furs, which she had worn to a "Wigs and Whiskey" party the night before our arrival.

See Tracy inspect.

Detroit has been fun. Early this morning, Laura and I decided to stay an extra day in Detroit (making it one actual day, rather than just a stop-over), because we realized how much we missed our good friend Tracy. It has been a smart decision, and as you can see, the proof is in the pictures. Off to the Badlands!

Ottawa, the conclusion

Our last night in Ottawa was a lot of fun. It always seems like the most fun to be had in a city, even a new city, is found in enjoying some QT with friends. We just planted ourselves in Patrick's sauna of a room and flipped through trashy Canadian television until the early hours of the morning.
After resting up for the return trip, we grabbed breakfast and our belongings, and readied ourselves for the road.

Patrick sees us off.

Sadness is apparent here, as we consider the first stop on our grand voyage, knowing it is soon to be in the past.

"Drink N Dreidel"
Gimmel wins all.

flamin' hot chee-tos (TM) were the spoils of the day

perhaps the most elegant moment of the night was when patrick became aware of laura's camera.

"PAPARAZZI!"

"You killed Diana!"

Patrick's friend, James, was in his room again.

James looks precious, eh?

Highlights of Ottawa:
1. Walking around the city
2. Eavesdropping on Quebecois
3. Teaching Patrick the proper usage of "That's What She Said"

Enjoy your first semester at school, Pat, and look out for some postcards!
